Tolla’s

One of Kevin’s good childhood friends was in town for a wedding last weekend and stayed with us. We met up with some other friends and all grabbed dinner late Friday evening to kick off the weekend. Don’t worry, I got a Venti pumpkin spice latte in anticipation of staying awake past my bedtime.

We headed out to dinner at Tolla’s, a small Winter Park Italian Restaurant. It’s a very cute little restaurant that only serves beer and wine. They offer typical Italian favorites. We started out with a big pile of warm, crusty bread.

Since we got there pretty late, they were out of a few menu items for the day. Since they were out of mussels, I decided to order a meatball sub.

Tolla's-Meatball Parmigiana

The meatballs were very moist and had a nice texture compared to the toasted bread.

Kevin ordered a pepperoni pizza, which he really enjoyed.

Everyone seemed to really enjoy their meals, and I liked the quaint atmosphere of Tolla’s.

I forgot to mention some important celebrations that happened recently! Last Thursday, Kevin and I celebrated our 3-year dating anniversary. I still keep trying to figure out if you’re supposed to celebrate dating anniversaries after you’re married. Kevin bought me a bottle of Quintessa (the wine he used to propose) and we just enjoyed a nice, quiet evening together.

Also, last Saturday, Parko turned 4! He’s really not a puppy anymore, even though his eyes beg to differ. He was showered with toys, treats and attention.

What is your policy on dating anniversaries after marriage?

Hot Olives

Kevin has been really sick all week, so I flew solo Tuesday evening to meet my parents for dinner at Hot Olives, a modern American restaurant in Winter Park. We had a few hiccups in our evening, but overall I really enjoyed Hot Olives and would return.

Hot Olives-Tapenade

Right off the bat they had me sold by placing a basket of assorted breads at the table accompanied by a pile of olive tapenade. I love olives, so this was right up my alley.

For an appetizer, we ordered the Hot Olives, their signature dish. These are jumbo black olives stuffed with cheese then breaded with panko and fried. They are served with bleu cheese and chili sauce.

Hot Olives-Hot Olives

The cheese and olive combination was great, and the breading was nice and light.

One thing I really enjoyed about Hot Olives was that you could order half portions of many of their dinners. I ordered a half portion of the shrimp and grits, which was plenty after all the bread and hot olives I ate.

Hot Olives-Richard's Low Country Shrimp and Grits

Along with jumbo tiger shrimp, the dish featured mushrooms and bacon. These were coated in a demi glace and sat on top of peppery grits. The dish was extremely savory and filling. I was very pleased with my selection and cleaned my plate.

My step mom ordered the grouper sandwich but was actually presented with the crab cake sandwich. Like me, she’s not very picky so ate it and said it was very good.

I always feel awful about sending things back.

My dad ordered the Key West Grouper and thought the lime flavor was too overpowering.

Our waiter was extremely attentive and polite all evening, and when he saw that my dad didn’t enjoy the grouper (which was by no fault of the restaurant, just a personal preference), the waiter immediately offered him another dish. My dad didn’t take him up on his offer, but I thought the level of service we received was very good despite him bringing out the wrong dish.

Besides a wide variety of seafood, they offer pasta dishes and meat dishes. They also have a very interesting cocktail menu.

If you could pick any one ingredient for a restaurant to revolve around, what would it be? I’d have to say garlic. But it probably wouldn’t be a big hit for date nights.

One-Year Engagement

On Friday, Kevin and I celebrated one year of being engaged. Yes, one year ago from last Friday, I skipped the gym after work and came home under the guise that Kevin needed to go shopping for a new golf bag. Upon entering the house, I walked into Parko running around, a playlist of songs I had considered as potential “first dances,” a bottle of Quintessa and Kevin down on one knee asking me to marry him. It was the easiest question I ever had to answer, and I’m grateful every day knowing how blessed I am to have him in my life.

After work on Friday, Kevin and I headed out to Winter Park Fish Company. We drove by there often, but I had yet to try it. It’s a quick-service seafood restaurant with a really nice covered porch for outdoor dining. They offer beer and wine and an interesting selection of desserts, including peanut butter and jelly cake.

Once you order at the counter, they bring the food to your seat. Upon sitting down, the waitress brought out some of their house tuna salad to try.

Winter Park Fish Co-Tuna Salad

I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting much, but their tuna salad is really delicious. It was very flavorful and not mayonnaise-y at all. It was a great pre-meal snack.

For an appetizer, we ordered their shrimp ceviche.

Winter Park Fish Co-Shrimp Ceviche

I thought the shrimp was good but not the greatest dish of the evening. The lime was a little overpowering and made for very tart shrimp.

For my main course, I ordered a crab cake sandwich with a side of hush puppies.

Winter Park Fish Co-Crab Cake Sandwich

The sandwich was huge and very delicious. It came on Hawaiian bread. I loved the sweet chunks of crab meat. There was not a lot of filler in the patty at all. The hush puppies were also delicious (fried corn bread dusted with powdered sugar), but I was so full from everything else that I only managed to eat a couple.

Kevin ordered their hamburger and was pleasantly surprised that a seafood restaurant had such a good burger.

We sat out on the covered porch and watched the rain fall for awhile before making a run for it and heading to the mall for some browsing. After the mall, we retreated home to watch a movie I really had been wanting to see: Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

The documentary is about 85-year-old Jiro who is considered to be the world’s best sushi chef. He owns a 10-seat, sushi-only restaurant unceremoniously located in a subway station stop in Tokyo. The movie talks about his commitment to his work, his relationship with and the pressure on his sons to follow in his steps, and how he sees sushi as an art and a symphony. Despite our huge dinner, I was drooling by the end of the film. Jiro’s life is very interesting, a little sad and full of beautiful sushi.

Kevin planned out the entire evening starting with a restaurant I had been wanting to try and finishing with a movie I had been wanting to see. He’s so thoughtful, and I can’t wait to call him my husband in just about two months.

What is your favorite documentary?

Cask & Larder

When a new restaurant opens, I get really, really excited. When one as highly anticipated as Cask & Larder opens, it’s like Christmas morning.

Cask & Larder

Cask & Larder is the second restaurant by the highly acclaimed husband and wife duo James and Julie Petrakis, chefs and owners of my favorite restaurant, The Ravenous Pig. They also happen to be James Beard award nominees. Cask & Larder serves southern food and in-house brews.

They only opened a week ago, so I was excited that one of our friends got a reservation for a bunch of us to try it out on Saturday evening. I instantly fell in love with the décor. Everything is dressed in pale blues and crisp whites with a few rustic touches. With their simple plates and platters, you really feel like you’re in someone’s southern kitchen. I want to decorate our home in the same style. It’s elegant, quaint and inviting.

Kevin started out with one of their beers that they brew on site, but I went with the C & L Lemonade. It is vodka infused with tea and sage mixed with homemade pink lemonade and ginger beer.

Cask & Larder-C & L Lemonade

It tasted just like pink lemonade and went back a little too easily. Sometimes I forgot I was drinking alcohol!

We ordered a lot of different items at our table. Below are some of our wonderful eats from the evening. First up are the appetizers.

Country Ham Tasting

They have a large sign in the dining room telling you where everything is from.  That evening we got Benton from Madisonville, Tennessee, C&L Berkshire from Winter Park, Florida, and Rufus Brown from Johnston County, North Carolina. The hams came with farmers cheese, pepper jam and some of the most delicious biscuits I’ve ever had.

Waffle Fries

Topped with chicken liver gravy, buttermilk cheese curds, and pickled scallions.

Oysters

They also offer a large selection of raw oysters that constantly changes.

Rabbit Pie

Served with picked egg, cornichons and mustard.

Now onto the main courses!

Beef Brisket

Kevin ordered the beef brisket, which he really enjoyed. Although Kevin got his plain, it can come with horseradish-dill pickles and mustard. It also comes with homemade yeast rolls.

Heritage Fried Chicken

I was able to sneak a few bites of the fried chicken, and it was wonderful. The chicken was incredibly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It was also drizzled with honey, giving it a nice sticky glaze.

Mac & Cheese

With pickled mustard seeds and ham-cheddar crumble. How could that not be good? It was creamy and decadent.

Snapper Stew

Our friend Judy ordered the snapper stew, which I came close to ordering as well. It came with blue crab, shrimp and roasted potatoes.

Smoked Oyster & Crawfish Pot Pie

This was my meal, and I’m so happy I ordered it. The crawfish and oysters came in a cornbread crust. Everything was slightly sweet, fresh and wonderful.

Dessert time!

Fried Dough

Made with “wit” beer and served with citrus-caramel glaze. Amazing.

Mud Pie in a Jar

Layers of chocolate crème, cream custard and raspberry glaze served with chocolate crisps.

Cask & Larder-Mud Pie

Needless to say, my evening was spectacular. The food lived up to the hype, and I can’t wait to return. The only bizarre thing that happened that evening was an older gentleman approached our table while we were paying our bills and asked if we were almost done because his party was waiting at the bar and was trying to decide if they should wait any longer. I didn’t feel like we were lingering, and we had made reservations. I was so taken aback that he actually approached our table that I couldn’t even respond. Luckily, a woman who appeared to work there quickly came up to him and steered him away from our table and told us to take our time. For the record, we did leave promptly after paying our bills. He wasn’t being rude, just a little pushy, and I don’t think I had ever experienced that type of behavior in a restaurant. Maybe I’m the only one?

Armando’s

One thing I love about the Orlando area is all the old neighborhoods around town. I love the cobblestone roads and historical buildings. Kevin and I were in the Hannibal Square area, one of these older neighborhoods near swanky Park Avenue in Winter Park, and decided to stop for some dinner.

We decided to try Armando’s, an Italian restaurant and pizzeria. It sits on a cute corner, has plenty of outdoor dining and a bar that is half outside and half inside. The atmosphere was great and the aromas were enticing. Instead of waiting for a table, we just sat at the outdoor area of the bar.

We started out with a basket of warm, chewy bread.

Armando's-Bread

Kevin ordered rigatoni bolognese and loved it.

Armado's-Rigatoni Bolognese

I ordered the evening’s special, zuppa di pesce, a large variety of seafood with pasta in a spicy sauce.

Armando's-Zuppa di Pesce

The dish had calamari, fish, mussels, clams and scallops. The pasta was perfectly al dente. The meal was very hearty and filling. I was stuffed.

I love when we stumble upon new neighborhood finds. Their pizzas also looked really good, so I think a return trip is in store.

In less than three months, I’ll be a married woman! I can’t believe how quickly it all is approaching. This morning I had my first dress fitting.

Casa di Bella

I didn’t think I could love my dress any more until I started seeing it really fit to my measurements. It looked so good all pinned together at the proper lengths and dimensions. I can’t wait to see the final product, and more importantly, for Kevin to see it.

Do you prefer indoor or outdoor dining?
