Celebrating 27

Yesterday (on 10/11/12!) I turned 27 years old—crazy. My birthday snuck up on me this year. I have been so busy preparing for the wedding and working a lot that it just didn’t feel like it should already be mid-October and my birthday season. The company I work for gives a birthday holiday, so I took yesterday off work and decided to take today off as well for an extra long birthday weekend. Kevin also took the two days off, and it was wonderful to spend the time with him.

My birthday started off spectacularly with a trip to Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte then we were off to the courthouse to get our marriage license! It was a quick and easy process, and now all we need is for our officiant to sign the document on our big day.

After “getting married,” we headed out to lunch with Parko to take advantage of not being at work on a gorgeous Thursday.

Anthony's-Lunch Special

We headed to Anthony’s in Thornton Park and sat outside. There was such a nice breeze, and it finally felt a little like October. We started out with an order of zucchini fries.

Anthony's-Zucchini Fries

They were a little on the salty side, but the zucchini inside was delicious.

I ordered the two-slice lunch special with meatball pizza. Kevin ordered two slices of Sicilian pepperoni.

It was great to spend the afternoon with my boys. I really wanted to keep this year’s birthday low key. Things have been very hectic, so it was nice to slow down and just enjoy a relaxing day.

Later that evening Kevin took me out for an amazing dinner at Chez Vincent in Winter Park. It is an upscale, traditional French restaurant. The ambiance was so nice and I really just wanted to enjoy my birthday and my evening out with Kevin, so I didn’t take any photos. But I did enjoy a glass of red wine, the majority of a bread basket with three different types of butter, escargot in garlic butter sauce, rack of lamb with blue cheese sauce and a chocolate raspberry soufflé. Kevin ordered their filet mignon topped with peppercorns and a cognac sauce and partook in the soufflé. It was a very romantic evening, and the food was so mouthwatering.

I’m so excited that I still have two more days of freedom ahead! 26 was such a wonderful year full of wedding planning, taking my GMAT and lots of house projects to continue to build our home. I can’t wait to see what 27 brings. I have a feeling it will be my best year yet.

Maxine’s on Shine

There’s an old house on Shine Avenue in Thornton Park that was turned into a restaurant. It’s nestled among other historic houses in a really cute neighborhood, but for some reason the restaurant occupying the home never sticks. Each iteration had a similar theme: Italian comfort food. Kevin and I first went there on one of our first dates when it was called Bravissimo. Then it became Shine Neighborhood Kitchen, which we loved. Now it has become Maxine’s on Shine. Kevin and I tried this third version with our friends Daniel and Alia who just moved downtown from Avalon Park. (Alia is my friend who instructs at The Pilates Loft.)

Maxine’s was hopping on Saturday night, and the entire street smelled like garlic, making my stomach super excited. After ordering a round of drinks, we started our meal out with bruschetta.

Maxine's - Bruscetta

The bruschetta was delicious. You could taste the freshness of the mozzarella on the thick French bread. I really enjoyed all of the flavors and the freshness of the ingredients. Unfortunately, the bruschetta would be the highlight of the meal.

I actually ordered an appetizer for my main dish because they had mussels, which sounded delicious at that particular moment.

Maxine's - Steamed Mussels Bianco

The menu described the sauce as a white wine garlic sauce, which I didn’t really get from what was presented. I didn’t taste any garlic, and the sauce just tasted like tomatoes. I actually prefer the mussels at Bonefish. I’ve come to the conclusion that Bonefish’s sauce on their mussels is unbeatable.

Overall, I felt like everything we had, besides the bruschetta, was under seasoned. Everything tasted very bland and didn’t match the wonderful aromas that perfumed the neighborhood.

Kevin ordered the Chicken Maxine’s, which is their version of chicken marsala.

Maxine's - Chicken Maxine's

I really liked the creaminess of the sauce and the variety of mushrooms in the dish, but it still fell short in terms of seasonings. Some extra flavors would have really brought everything together to make a full flavored dish. I also tried a bite of Alia’s chicken parmigiana, which had the same verdict: lack of flavor.

Daniel, on the other hand, loved his dish. He also ordered an appetizer as his main dish. It also happened to be a special of that evening: fish quesadillas.

Maxine's - Fish Quesadillas

My favorite thing about Shine Neighborhood Kitchen was their cheesecake. It tasted so fresh and light. After trying it, I constantly craved it for a week. I needed to know if the desserts at Maxine’s were as tasty. We ordered a bacon chocolate cheesecake to share.

Maxine's - Bacon Chocolate Cheesecake

The flavors were really interesting. I actually liked the crispy bacon with the dark chocolate shell over the top of the cheesecake. It made for a nice sweet and salty combination. The cheesecake, however, was not as good as Shine’s cheesecake. It was very dense. If you like a denser cheesecake, you would probably enjoy this. I just prefer lighter cheesecakes, and Shine’s had a really homemade taste.

The ambiance at Maxine’s was also odd. They have musical entertainment, but the restaurant is very small, so the music overpowers any hopes of conversation. It would work great if the space was bigger so the noise could diffuse, but it just bounced off the ceiling and walls and pounded our eardrums.

Overall, I’d recommend Maxine’s on Shine for some drinks and maybe appetizers. They have a great wine list. I just wasn’t thrilled about the dinner or atmosphere.

Have you ever tried bacon for dessert?

Lunch at Anthony’s

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy having time off work? I love my job, but I also love being able to take long mid-day walks with Kevin and Parko. Yesterday we walked around Lake Eola in downtown Orlando then grabbed lunch at our favorite pizzeria, Anthony’s, in Thornton Park.

Parko

Parko enjoyed being able to accompany us at lunch, since Anthony’s has a huge outdoor seating area. The waitress even brought him out a water bowl. I love places that are dog friendly.

Kevin and I split an order of garlic bread with cheese, which was super delicious. It had plenty of fresh herbs, and the mozzarella was nice and thick.

We also split a pizza: half pepperoni for him and half veggies for me.

What a perfect lunch on our day off.

Chilly Spoons

I am extremely lucky because my two best friends from college have finally both ended up in Orlando. My friends Megan and Sarah both recently moved to town, and I’ve been having a blast having them near.

Girls

(This is from a couple years ago.)

The other evening, the three of us took a little walk to Thornton Park for my first trip to Chilly Spoons. It’s your typical frozen yogurt bar with rotating flavors and a plethora of goodies to top them with.

I have slightly bizarre froyo habits. I love frozen yogurt, but I never really crave more than a little bit of it. That’s why these froyo bars are the best. I can get just a small sampling to satisfy the craving. I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than $2 for frozen yogurt at one of these places.

Chilly Spoons

They had pumpkin flavor, but surprisingly I refrained. I was in the mood for something more fruity and sour, so I got their mixed berry tart froyo with strawberries, raspberries and snow caps. I was very happy with my sweet and sour concoction. And it was the perfect amount!

What is your favorite froyo combo? I’m also a pretty big fan of adding gummy bears.

Shine Neighborhood Kitchen

Last night Kevin and I went out to dinner with our friends and neighbors Scott and Frank who are sadly moving, so we’re trying to get in all the time we can with them. They are one of the reasons why we love where we live so much, and I really hope someone lame doesn’t move into their house.

We headed to one of their favorite nearby restaurants, Shine Neighborhood Kitchen in Thornton Park. The restaurant is nestled amongst old houses and still looks like a house itself, so it literally is a neighborhood restaurant. Kevin and I went to this location on one of our first dates, but it was occupied by Bravissimo, who has since moved to Altamonte Springs. We had yet to try Shine Neighborhood Kitchen.

We arrived at Shine at almost 8, and the place was packed for a Thursday evening, which is always a good sign of the food. Upon walking in, you feel the neighborhood vibe. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming, and our service was great.

Scott and Frank each started out with salads: spinach and Greek, respectively. Kevin and I stole some bites, and they were both really delicious. The salad dressings on each were light and flavorful.

The salads were also a really decent size—perfect for sharing before your meal…or so I tell myself as I reach for more bites of their salads.

No one had a complaint about our main entrees either.

Scott ordered the bruschetta mahi, a special that evening that I was also tempted to order. It featured grilled mahi over pasta with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. It sounds like a great flavor combination and something I want to try to replicate at home.

Frank ordered lamb chops served over mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus. This was also a special that day, and Frank got the last order! Clearly they are a hit. I’m not quite sure how they knew to pair one of my favorite proteins with two of my favorite vegetables.

Kevin ordered chicken marsala, of which I stole some bites. The chicken was incredibly tender, and the flavor of the sauce was great.

After much debate, I ordered the chicken and lobster cannelloni. Holy yum.

The chicken was nice and tender and balanced out well with the buttery bits of lobster. The pasta was also perfectly al dente making the dish filling but delicious. I cleaned my plate.

Scott and Frank told us about how the desserts are made in house and how amazing they are, so obviously, we had to witness this for ourselves. We ordered two desserts for the table: a chocolate bar creation whose name escapes me and New York style cheesecake.

chocolate

Any chocolate lover would love this. It is the cross between a chocolate truffle and mousse. It’s slightly heavier than mousse but still has that soft, creamy texture. It was extremely decadent.

cheesecake

At first when they suggested cheesecake, I kind of thought it was a boring option. Not ordering that cheesecake would have been one of the worse decisions of my life. I’ve been craving it ever since. It’s extremely light. I’ve never had cheesecake so light before. You can actually taste the ricotta and fresh ingredients that went into the making of it. It really was the best cheesecake I’ve ever had.

group

I was so happy to be able to spend the evening with Scott and Frank before their move. Upon returning home, I promptly entered into a food/wine coma with cheesecake as my pillow and wrapped in my cannelloni blanket.

Are there any great neighborhood restaurants near you?
