Sit ‘n Stay

On Sunday, Kevin had a big day of golfing, and I managed to pull myself away from 9/11 coverage on TV just long enough to take Parko out on the town. My friend Sarah joined us for a little walk to Thornton Park.

Parko had no idea what was coming.

A pet food truck! Sit ‘n Stay Pet Café is Orlando’s first pet food truck and one of the first in the entire nation. They serve up tasty treats for dogs and cats.

It was a pretty hot afternoon, so Parko appreciated the complimentary water out for the patrons.

Their menu features locally sourced, all natural, organic treats with fresh ingredients. It was very difficult for me to decide what to get Parko. I just had no idea what he was in the mood for.

Since it was a hot day, I knew ice cream would probably be refreshing, but Parko had never had ice cream before. Then I saw it: maple bacon “pup-sicles” calling out to Parko’s love of Beggin’ Strips. I ordered one pupsicle for my pup.

At first, he wasn’t sure what to do with it. The ice cream smelled like Beggin’ Strips, but the fact that it was frozen and Parko couldn’t quite get his mouth around it drove him crazy. The most ferocious licking ensued, but as it melted, he gobbled it up.

After returning home, Parko entered a bacon ice cream coma.

But the treats didn’t end there. I also picked up a pack of Puppy Sliders, featuring organic beef, which Parko got to try at dinnertime.

He seemed to really enjoy these as well.

The owners of Sit ‘n Stay were incredibly nice, and they both have veterinary backgrounds, so they really know what’s best for your pets. I was so excited to introduce Parko to his first food truck!

Food trucks galore

Last night Kevin and I headed out to the Fashion Square Mall to meet up with Seth and Ana at a food truck bazaar sponsored by The Daily City. After being rained out last week, I was eager to get out to this one, and luckily the weather cooperated.

We got there early and I immediately knew which food truck I wanted to try: Melissa’s Chicken and Waffles. I ordered their original chicken and waffles topped with country gravy.

Thank goodness Kevin and I shared. It was a lot of really filling food. The waffle was very airy although not as crisp on the outside as a traditional Belgium waffle. The friend chicken tenders on top were really tender and juicy, and the breading was slightly spicy. It was a perfect flavor combination with the sweet waffle and gravy. It was sweet and salty, which means I was obsessed.

Kevin really enjoyed it too. We shared our own Lady and the Tramp moment.

Kevin also ordered a brisket sandwich from C&S Brisket Bus. He said the meat was really good, but the Texas toast it was served on was a little soggy.

Seth and Ana ordered some croquettes, which looked delicious. They also ordered some barbeque (not pictured), cake pops from The Batter Bowl and Jeremiah’s Italian Ice. The Italian ice looked so good that I knew I had to end my evening with some as well.

Seth and Ana also brought their puppies, Ryder and Rita, to share in the fun.

It was the perfect cap off to the weekend. Is it a bad sign that I’m already craving chicken and waffles again?

Have you ever had chicken and waffles? Would you ever want to try it?

What’s the oddest flavor combinations you’ve had or seen? One of the food trucks featured a bacon cheeseburger that had two Krispy Kreme donuts instead of the hamburger buns. I still need to muster up the strength to try it!

Korean BBQ Taco Box Food Truck

Since the food truck scene has swept Orlando, I have most anticipated trying the Korean BBQ Taco Box truck. I kept hearing how wonderful it was. At the food truck bazaars, they always had the longest line by far. Their fleet has even recently expanded to four trucks meaning they cover even more of Orlando at a time.

On Saturday Kevin spotted the truck in the Mills50 district, so we took a walk to get me the coveted food.

I ordered the spicy pork taco box, which I have heard is the most traditional and the most popular.

Parko wasn’t nearly as excited as I was while waiting for our food.

We walked home with our food, and I couldn’t get home fast enough. First of all, it was dang hot outside. But more importantly, the food smelled so delicious. Different spices perfumed out of the box making me hungrier and hungrier on our walk.

Finally, we got home, and I couldn’t believe how much food we had gotten for the price.

Inside was one generously sized taco, two fried cheese sushi rolls, a fried tofu block with teriyaki sauce, a chicken drumstick in a spicy glaze and a salad topped with ginger dressing.

I decided to work my way around the sides saving the taco for last. The ginger salad was better than any side salad I’ve had in a Japanese restaurant because it had big slices of onions and the ginger dressing was thick with a lot of flavor. I love when the ginger dressing is more of a paste than a liquid dressing. The tofu and sushi were both mild in flavor and very good. The drumstick was amazing with the perfect amount of spiciness. I was literally licking my fingers.

Finally, I ate the spicy pork taco, and it lived up to all the wonderful things everyone was saying. I wish I had five more. I can’t remember eating anything so flavorful. There were so many different spices and flavors. I have a feeling I’ll be craving this a lot more.

Recently, I’ve wanted to try to get back into running. Running has always been kind of a love/hate relationship for me. I’m just not very fast, and it’s difficult for me to build up distance. Lately temperatures outside have been condemning me to a treadmill and I’ve been so focused on strength training, so cardio has just been an afterthought. I would hop on a treadmill or the StairMaster for a little while just to say I had. But I decided that I didn’t want my cardio routine to slip like my strength routine had in the past, so I’m going to try to build up some running stamina. I know it will be frustrating at first, but hopefully I can still keep things interesting.

After my arms workout today, I tried Brittany’s Beginner’s Running Interval Treadmill Workout. It definitely got me huffing and puffing but in a good way. I’m proud that I completed it, and since I never get up to 6.5 on the treadmill, hopefully I’m getting stronger in the process. I think I need to stay on this level for a little while before trying her intermediate workout!

Any tips to give a much-needed kick in the butt to my running? I think I may start Couch to 5K and see how that goes.

Recap: Orlando Food Truck Bazaar #2

On Sunday night, my friend Bryan and I went to the second Orlando Food Truck Bazaar presented by The Daily City. We went to the first bazaar, but we didn’t get to try too many trucks as the lines were extremely long, and it was extremely crowded. It was a much better experience this time. The event took place at the Fashion Square Mall parking lot so there was a lot more room, and there were more trucks making the lines more evenly distributed.

We started off in line at the Pupuseria Flores truck and got two pupusas, which are stuff tortillas. We got one with cheese and jalapeño and one stuffed with pork and cheese. Bryan and I agreed that this would be a great late night snack after the bars. I think the tortillas just needed a little more salt and they would have been perfect.

The couple next to us in line had gotten the Luther Vandross burger from Treehouse Truck. It is a bacon cheeseburger between two glazed donuts. Upon biting into it, a pretty good amount of grease dripped down the man’s white shirt. The burger looked disgustingly delicious. He seemed to enjoy it.

Bryan’s brother, who was also there, brought us an order of the deep fried cheese grits from the Big Wheel Provisions truck. The cheese grits were on par with 4Rivers BUT DEEP FRIED. They were the perfect creamy texture, and the batter provided an excellent crunch.

Our wandering taste buds then took us to CK Jerk Shack for some Jamaican. The smoked jerk pork was my favorite dish of the evening. It was served on coconut rice with a sweet guava barbeque sauce on top. The pork was juicy and moist.

Our final destination for the evening was The Crooked Spoon where we got the Voodoo dog and whoopie pies. The Voodoo dog is a hot dog topped with crawfish gumbo. It was slightly spicy with big chunks of crawfish. It was surf and turf in hot dog form. The whoopie pie was chocolate with lime frosting in the middle. It was the perfect dessert to top it all off!

It looks like The Daily City is already planning for their next bazaar. I still need to try the Korean BBQ truck, and I was pretty intrigued by the chicken and waffles truck.
