Some girls get flowers…but I get an entire garden.

Kevin left work early one day, went to Home Depot and built me a garden for our backyard. I was so surprised when I came home to discover it. The next weekend, we went back to Home Depot to accessorize the backyard even more with a gliding bench.

Kevin calls it our urban oasis.
I was really nervous to make the leap and actually buy plants for the garden because I am terrible with plants. For some reason, I can’t seem to keep any alive.
On Sunday, after some research, we finally went to Home Depot (sense a trend here?) for plants and then spent the afternoon working on our garden.
We planted:
- tomatoes
- broccoli
- basil
- oregano
- green onions
- dill

I really, really, really hope they survive. What surprised me the most was that I actually enjoyed being outside and getting all dirty and working in the garden.

We probably won’t see any veggies for a couple of months, but you can smell the herbs out there. It makes our yard seem so lush and fresh.
And…two days later…everything’s still alive!

I’m pretty sure there’s also some extra fertilizer in there in the form of cat poo. That just means Parko needs to spend more time patrolling the garden.

This is definitely one of Kevin’s best gifts ever to me. I just hope I can keep everything alive.
How’s your green thumb?

That’s such a good idea for a surprise other than flowers! You must be excited to have fresh veggies and stuff someday!
Kevin is so sweet! That is such a lovely gift that he made for you.
I’ve never tried to grow my own veggies before, but I would love to one day when I have my own home. My mom has one in her garden and I love eating fresh veggies and fruits.
That is such a nice gesture! You have yourself a keeper, Jessica
Honestly though, if you keep the garden alive you will see that having fresh herbs is one of the most satisfying things. I always look forward to visiting home because I get to steal from my brothers basil & rosemary garden for cooking. Delicioso
Oh I love that Kevin made a garden for you!! That is such a sweet gift. If I had a yard, I would definitely take advantage of it. Not sure how my green thumb is, but I can keep herbs alive!
Your fiance is awesome!!
That’s so sweet of Kevin! Good luck testing out your gardening skills. I kill basil in a matter of days, so it’s all store-bought herbs and veggies over here!
This. Is. Awesome. I would love to have my own garden, so great. Let us know how the produce comes along…& what yummy food you make with it
You’ll do great! I had a garden when my friends let me stay with them over a summer while I job hunted, and it surprisingly flourished. I didn’t even water it some days, and I ended up with more than a house of us could finish.
That garden is great! It is really wonderful to use your own fresh herbs. Perhaps I’ll try growing window-sill herbs again! You’ve inspired me!
Awwa… a love garden. Kinda like a love fern. Just kidding. It looks awesome!!!! Good luck. I’ve never grown anything, but I want to grow basil just to save money! Haha
Aww! I think that is super sweet that Kevin made a garden for you! That is going to save you so much money in the future when everything starts growing! I love the gliding bench too.
That’s so cute! I wish I could have a garden, one of these days. Good luck with your garden. I’m sure with Kevin’s help, you two will be able to keep it thriving!
That’s adorable! He is definitely a keeper. I planted a garden last spring, the deer at everything. I got about two tomatoes out of the deal.
We had a garden last year — 2 actually. We had one at the house and one at a local community garden. One fell victim to stink bugs and other did pretty well when Bean (my dog) wasn’t eating my harvest. He’s a closet vegetarian. Just be certain you keep your veggies watered but not over watered and keep an eye out for stink bugs! They will kill EVERYTHING!
Gah! I’m SO jealous!! I’ve never had the chance to give my green thumb a try but I definitely hope that I can someday in the future!
Can’t wait to see how it goes!
