Food trucks galore

Last night Kevin and I headed out to the Fashion Square Mall to meet up with Seth and Ana at a food truck bazaar sponsored by The Daily City. After being rained out last week, I was eager to get out to this one, and luckily the weather cooperated.

We got there early and I immediately knew which food truck I wanted to try: Melissa’s Chicken and Waffles. I ordered their original chicken and waffles topped with country gravy.

Thank goodness Kevin and I shared. It was a lot of really filling food. The waffle was very airy although not as crisp on the outside as a traditional Belgium waffle. The friend chicken tenders on top were really tender and juicy, and the breading was slightly spicy. It was a perfect flavor combination with the sweet waffle and gravy. It was sweet and salty, which means I was obsessed.

Kevin really enjoyed it too. We shared our own Lady and the Tramp moment.

Kevin also ordered a brisket sandwich from C&S Brisket Bus. He said the meat was really good, but the Texas toast it was served on was a little soggy.

Seth and Ana ordered some croquettes, which looked delicious. They also ordered some barbeque (not pictured), cake pops from The Batter Bowl and Jeremiah’s Italian Ice. The Italian ice looked so good that I knew I had to end my evening with some as well.

Seth and Ana also brought their puppies, Ryder and Rita, to share in the fun.

It was the perfect cap off to the weekend. Is it a bad sign that I’m already craving chicken and waffles again?

Have you ever had chicken and waffles? Would you ever want to try it?

What’s the oddest flavor combinations you’ve had or seen? One of the food trucks featured a bacon cheeseburger that had two Krispy Kreme donuts instead of the hamburger buns. I still need to muster up the strength to try it!

  1. Chicken and waffles!? It sounds like a southern fantasy <3
I don't think I would be able to try it because of my wheat sensitivity, but I can tell you right now that Will would be ALL over that!

  2. What a day! Street food of any type can definitely be the best :) I’ve never had chicken and waffles, but I can only imagine how incredibly awesome that would be!

  3. Yum! Food Trucks!

I don’t know that I would try the Chicken & Waffles. Maybe taste if someone else got them though. My hubby got the same sandwich when the trucks were in Avalon. The meat was PERFECT.

Mmmmm….Jeremiah’s. You know I am obsessed!

  4. My grandmother used to make the most amazing chicken and waffles but it was very different than the way they make here in the south. She would roast a chicken, then shred it. Then she’d served the shredded chicken over waffles, topped with her chicken gravy. I still dream of that meal. We had chicken and waffles at Gladys Knight’s restaurant in Atlanta this spring and it was really good.

We were there last night, too! Sorry I missed you! I went with the Crooked Spoon Caribbean Chicken quesadilla — one of my fav food truck foods!

  5. That picture of you and Kevin is great! lol I’ve never had chicken and waffles because I don’t eat chicken anymore, but i’m surprised I never tried it before.

  6. I wanted to make it out this Sunday but my stomach decided to act up on me so I didn’t. Next time for sure I’m going to the food truck bazaar at Fashion Square, always love trying new things!

  7. Er

I have never even heard of chicken and waffles. I’m not sure I would be a fan but I am all over waffles and ice cream : )

  8. I’ve always wanted to try chicken and waffles! I am waffle obsessed and I love sweet&salty combined…!

  9. What a fun time! Everything looks really good! I never even thought of trying something like chicken on waffles- I’m usually an ice cream and waffles person! Love your Lady and the Tramp pic ;)

  10. at first, i thought i read bbq cake pops. and i thought, “eh, gross.” ha. but then i realized barbecue {comma} cake pops. makes much more sense! and sounds much tastier!

Chicken and Waffles actually started in NY in the 1930′s. Most think it started in the south but it didn’t. Their Chicken and Waffles are awesome!!
