Birthdays, barbeques and beer in Cocoa Beach

Today was supposed to be a beach day with friends to celebrate a birthday, but Mother Nature had other plans in store for us. Kevin and I knew rain was predicted for the day, but when we woke up outside was sunny and optimistic. Our group of eight met up at Cocoa Beach for lunch at Slow & Low Bar-B-Que Grill and Bar.

The atmosphere is really fun, and the prices were great. All of their lunch specials are under $7 and come with two sides, which was plenty of food. Kevin and I both ordered pulled pork sandwiches—his on garlic toast and mine on a regular bun. For my sides, I chose mashed sweet potatoes and fried okra. Kevin selected French fries and stew.

The pulled pork was very moist, and I topped mine with their sweet barbeque sauce, which was more tangy than sweet. I did think the pork could have had a little more seasoning, and I couldn’t taste the smoky flavor they’re so known for. It was good but not the best I’ve ever had. The fried okra was addicting. I could’ve eaten a large basket of those.

Upon leaving Slow & Low, the skies had begun to darken and rain started to fall. After contemplating a few scenarios, we ended up at Sandbar, a sports bar and grill, to drink the afternoon away. I ordered a banana colada (maybe I was trying to mentally channel the beach weather), which was delicious and refreshing. I question the amount of alcohol actually in the drink, but I was perfectly content with my banana colada “smoothie.”

Despite the rainy weather and the fact that we never made it to the beach, the day was full of great company, full bellies and fun times. It was a great way to spend the day.

Kevin and I decided we’d do breakfast sandwiches for dinner tonight (eggs, bacon and cheese on buttermilk biscuits). Kevin currently is cooking up the bacon and the house smells delicious.

What are you favorite rainy day plans?
